Spalting is a naturally occurring process that greatly enhances the character of wood, often resulting in entirely new colours and lines in an otherwise fairly plain wood. The process is essentially the early stages of decomposition. If stopped by drying at the right time, the character of the wood can be enhanced, without sacrificing structural integrity.
Great care is taken to select the right wood for Woodsmiths’ Spalted Clocks. They are shaped, smoothed, and finished with two coats of tung oil, and three coats of carnuba wax, transforming them into entirely unique wooden jewels (15cm x 8cm x 5cm).
